What the user will see (Design Factory)

When the user is using the glasses and they push down 2 of the filtered lens, they will see this on their page:

They will see invisible ink on the page that they didn’t see before without the glasses. but the user will need 2 of the lens down at a time on both eyes in order to see the image properly but the image will look three dimensional to them and a bit blurry.

Some little points about the design (Design factory)

The reasons why i made the glasses look like what it is, is because it looks professional and it makes the user look like a mystery solver and that the glasses look like something you get out of opticians which a lot of people find a fun experience especially to where these special and amazing glasses so i designed the glasses to look like something from that scene so some people would feel like that they are back in the opticians but reading their own book with secrets involved. I am pretty much trying to act out a experience that someone would have had in the past and this could bring a emotion to them when they use the product. although they will be using the product like the opticians glasses, the glasses in general will be completely different and the reason for this is because instead of using blurred and different types of lens, you are using special lens just like 3d glasses but glasses that can see invisible ink.

When i typed in on google “kids glasses” it came up with multiple pictures of different childish and cute glasses and this is pretty much how i got my design up and running for the kids glasses frame design and i did this the same with the adults glasses except adults glasses are more thin and more professional than thick and chancy and made out of plastic.

How i could potentially advertise this product (Design Factory)

There are multiple ways for me to advertise a product like this (a book with a surprise in it) and I’ve came to the conclusion that i would advertise it in a lot of ways.

For example:

I would advertise this product on social media sites like Twitter and Facebook and this is because they are all  well known and visited sites online and i would think that i could have a better chance of getting more sales by promoting the product on these type of sites as well as Facebook has a promoting feature where if i were to promote a product, i can choose the specific audience that i want the advertisement tailored to. Also creating a blog or getting well known blogs that talk about books could do a review on the product which is another way for cheap advertising. Although if i am going to promote this product on social media sites like Facebook, it is known that 83% of people that see the advertisement being shown, actually ignore it which could be a problem but thats why i have to make the advertisement eye-catching and interesting.

I would also use google ads to promote my product as it is a very cheap and a great way to promote any product/website as Google is still the largest search engine worldwide. Although google ads is measurable, flexible and cheap-ish, using this method would imply that i would need to maintain a website in order to use this advertisement technique but as its just a product and not a website, i wouldn’t use this technique.

Another option that i consider was to use billboards as a advertisement tool and the reason for this is because a lot of people could potentially walk, drive and wait by a billboard that would have my product on and if the advertisement is eye-catching, i could potentially get some people that might be interested in the product. depending on the size and placement of the billboard, the price however will be different but on average it would cost £300 a month to maintain this billboard in action. the only problem with billboards is that although people do look at them and even if they like them, eventually they will just forget about it during the day and so therefore, thats why the advertisement has to be appealing in all directions as well as eye-catching to the audience.

Even advertising on television is a option and on book shops website’s as well as on store windows.

Also if i wanted to advertise a little bit more, i could put it on sites like amazon and Ebay and put the product on offer to draw more customers in but other than that, advertising on these websites could help with selling the product to more customers especially as Amazon has this technique where if the user buys something on the site, on their next visit on the site, Amazon would advertise specific products to them that they might be interested in so applying for this advertisement technique may be a good way to get selling more.

Another advertising technique that i could look into is cross promotion and this is pretty much where i could Team up with other companies to sell my product and this is an ideal way to expand my audience. i could Find businesses promoting products or services that is relevant to my product/company’s offerings and initiate cross-promotion deals. As well as the major good point about this technique is that a well-planned cross promotion campaign could save both parties a lot of money dollars.

An example of a advertisement for my product that i could imply could be something like this:

Placement of glasses on the book (Design Factory)

Ive decided that for the placement on the glasses on each kids and adult book, the bottom on the page would be the most ideal place for the glasses to go. i decided this by looking at other types of books that have this sort of style (something that comes with the book in a see-through plastic conpartment on the cover of the book). I also tried different places where i could potentially put the glasses but looking at other books and looking at many designs, it seems like the top half of the book has the main design and that the bottom half has hardly any type of design so i figured that at the bottom would be a ideal place to put the compartment and even if the compartment is in the way of the design of the book, if you take the case off, you can still see the design except there will be a little hole in the book from where the glasses is placed.

Factors to think about with my design (Design Factory)

When designing these glasses for the kids i would need to think about what a kid would potentially do with these glasses like chew them so to make sure that these glasses are safe i chose non-toxic plastic as the main material and i would need to make sure that everything on the glasses is not sharp and protected so that the kids would not be in harms way.

Also when designing these glasses in general, i would need to think about the size of the glasses and how its going to fit on the user’s ears as everyone’s head size is different so i would need to add a extension on the glasses so that the user can adjust the glasses to their own comfort so that it can fit on their ears perfectly and  so it doesn’t fall off all the time or if its too tight or not.

I also have to think about the age limit for the kids as some kids may not know what this is or what to do with it so it can defeat the point of having this product for that certain age so i would make the age limit for 7+. The reason for this is because this is the age group in life where kids start to read and making the experience fun for them would be a beneficial factor as the main reason for these glasses is to have fun while reading so its educational for all ages.

The price for all kids books including the glasses that is with the book would be around £6 as it can be time-consuming and costly to make the glasses as well as the invisible text on the page that you can only it with the glasses on.

Also another point with the invisible pictures/ink on the pages, i would need to think about whether the ink on the page is poisonous especially if a kid goes round biting the pages and stuff like that.

As well as i would need to think about the amount of time while the user is using these glasses as using 3d glasses can hurt your eyes so the user would need to use a maximum time of 2 hours a time while using the glasses and it could cause headaches for the children as it is something new to them where the adults can adjust to these glasses quicker than the kids but i would still recommend on using them for around 2 hours at a time max just to be on the safe side.

As these glasses could be thrown around by kids or gets dropped on accident and it could break, i would potentially make sure that the material used is reinforced and that every component on the glasses is properly fixed in its position so that there is a unlikely chance that the glasses could break.

Process of making the ocular device glasses (Design Factory)

Here is the process of how i designed the glasses. First i just drew a pair of glasses then i added in the loupes that will be holding the lens in place as well as for the user to be able to move them then i added the lens in and after that i added in the coloured filters.

Screen Shot 2015-01-23 at 11.30.08 Screen Shot 2015-01-23 at 11.30.23 Screen Shot 2015-01-23 at 11.30.38 Screen Shot 2015-01-23 at 11.30.46

I did some research and to make this prop it would cost:

£10 for the cheap metal framed glasses.
£6 for a two pair of the gold plated loupes.
£12 for 4 coloured lenses from Anchor Optics.
£1 for a cheap plastic frame.

And for the kids glasses it would cost:

£3 for the cheap plastic glasses.
£1 for a two pair of the plastic loupes.
£12 for 4 colored lenses from Anchor Optics.
£1 for a cheap plastic frame.

These glasses can be used as 3d glasses as well (well with the red and blue lens)

The design on the side of the glasses could potentially look like this for the kids:

Screen Shot 2015-01-23 at 12.04.48And potentially for the adults, the design will be plain and simple as well looking professional. main colour for the adult’s glasses would be black, grey and white.

A look at some of the pictures i took in the Design Museum (Design Factory)

When i was in the design museum, the one thing that caught my eye was the quotations that was surrounding on the walls. All of these quotes all got to me when i was reading them and they were all inspirational and had a great meaning to design in general.

I think the museum put these quotes up on the wall to tell us that design is everywhere and that we could get a better idea of what different type of innovative designs there are and the process of coming up with those ideas as well as the thought process of coming up with the final ideas saying that without fail, there is no success.

Digital Camera Digital Camera

Also at the design museum, another part of the exhibition that caught my eye was the war part. This exhibition was all about the contrast betokening healing a person from something that happened in the battle and killing someone in the battle, although they both have a significant meaning that battles and wars all have hatred in them and its a nasty place to be in as well as people are risking their lives to fix something that is in the wrong.

The effect of the communication that i get from looking at these images is to make us feel for the people who are out in war risking their lives for us and to make us think that violence is not the option as both sides will lose something and it is not worth it.

These objects tells us that the designer obviously had some connections with being in war or something that is close to them being in war and lost a part of them inside.

Also the whole black and white scene with the two images applies a more depressing, sad type effect onto them to make people believe more as well as to make the images get to the audience on a emotional level.

Some little key points/ideas (Design Factory)

(Just some little ideas/points)

  • The black text could be laced with a colour that only a certain coloured filter could see so when you use the glasses, you could see a image made out of text.
  • For different aged books will contain different styled glasses. For children, the glasses will mainly be made out of plastic and have a childish graphic on the side of the glasses, and for adults the glasses could be made out of cheap metal with a more clean and professional look on the frame on the glasses.
  • The glasses could contain the feature chromatic aberration on the lenses to make the image look 3D.
  • With the books, there will be normal text on the page and when you use the different coloured filters, you see images that represents that individual page and when you use different coloured lens, a story of images may appear.
  • Another little idea i had with this idea is that i could use UV light to show hidden messages that are on the page.
