FMP – Inspiration from movies

I get most of my inspiration for this project from mainly science fiction movies such as Starwars, Startrek, Avatar, Interstellar, etc. Most of the inspiration could be small or big concepts within the movies but they are all inspiration for me nonetheless. All the movies that have inspired me are movies where the character within them have visited new planets out in space.

Avatar

Avatar is a brilliant Sci-fi Action movie. I personally think it’s a perfect movie in the blend of action, romance, and even adventure. But the main reason I am inspired by this movie is just the landscape of the main planet that we see in the movie. One scene that caught my eye instantly was the scene where you see these floating mountains/rocks which you can see multiple times in the background of the movie as well as seeing the floating rocks up close.

I would love to add this concept of floating islands or rocks in one of my own designs or even make a planet that only has floating rocks on it instead of actual land that doesn’t float mysteriously in the air.

Interstellar

Interstellar is a great sci-fi movie about the earth is dying and humans need to find a habitable planet soon otherwise Humans will become extinct. I thought the movie was perfect and the visual effects and concepts within the movie were inspiring. I found many things in this movie that were inspiring especially to me. All the concepts that inspired me were other planets that the character visited throughout the movie. One of the planets that they visited was a planet that was just water and another planet they visited was an ice based planet that even the clouds are made up of an ice form.

On the Ice based planet, I really like the concept of the upside down sort of mountains and I find it quite cool but it also gets me thinking if that the mountains in the air are actually either floating or it does actually loop around and connects to the ground. Nonetheless, this planet’s landscape has caught my eye and has given me multiple ideas that I could use for my own project.

Star Trek

The new Star Trek movies have really brought the younger and older generations together bringing back memories as well as creating new ones with the new take on the star trek universe. As I wasn’t a star trek fan of any sorts, I found these sci-fi movies to be quite cool and to have different sort of planets to showcase within the movie in space has helped me come up with some ideas that I could use for my own concept designs. One plant throughout the new Star Trek movies that caught my eye was the planet Nibiru. The reason it caught my eye more than anything in the other movies is that of the plants/nature. You just don’t see a forest where the main color is red instead of green.

This scene on Nibiru has changed my thinking a lot of what other planets would look like. This has gave me a lot of ideas like what if the sky was a different colour than what Earth normally has, what if other planet’s contents – which may just be like Earth’s contents – were different colours, like what if a cabbage was black or white, or what if the ocean was purple instead of blue.

There are a lot of what if questions and I think it’s my duty for this specific project to come up with answers with concepts of what I personally think some habitable planet’s landscapes out there could look like.

APP – 2116AD: Post-apocalyptic movies

I know I’ve seen multiple movies in the past that shows a post-apocalypse scenario and I thought if I’d rewatch them and watch some more movies, I could get some ideas to help create a piece of concept art for a new post-apocalypse world.

I watched the famous movie called ‘Mad Max: fury road’ and I realized that it is set in a different but very similar type of post-apocalypse world that what I want to do. At the start of the movie, it shows a brief few minutes of how and why this world has become full of this desert, barren wasteland and it’s like what my story for my project is. In the movie, it says that there was a nuclear skirmish and that the earth is dry and salty. I personally don’t believe that this is what will happen in a global thermonuclear skirmish happened, although it is a theory, it does have some factors that I could use in my work.

I haven’t watched the movie called ‘The Road’ but just looking at the images from the film, I feel like it could be the perfect film to use for inspiration especially with the image above with the long road and broken pylons and poles everywhere with individuals slowly walking away. I just like this idea for some reason, probably because it shows that the world has been destroyed and is in ruins as well as it shows another theory as to what a post-apocalypse scenario looks like.

Considering that most films and designs show different types of factors to the post-apocalyptic scene, I think it would be best to not have any individual in the design at the moment but only to show what destruction has happened with this world’s nuclear fallout. Theses types of films are great to watch and are a great inspiration for me.

A few ideas and thoughts

With my final major project, i would personally like to create a book that would tell a story about this town having a hidden essence and how this town has it and not any over. So what i will be doing is looking into what types of book and style would suit me to tell the story and portray my designs to the public.

I would like to mainly show my designs for my final major project instead of basing it on the story. I would like the audience to be indulged with the designs more so that they can value the idea and make them think about if the hidden essence could be an actual thing and we are too blind to see it.

The timeline that i would like to design my illustrations  in would be in a victorian type of time with the types of buildings and ways of transport they had back then as well as i will be involving some features that you see in these modern days for example, the clothing of some teenagers would be trousers and a hoodie.

I would like to show the audience that the hidden essence is showing us that the victorian times actually stayed with us and not the good bits for example jack the ripper has possessed most of the people living in this town and are secretly dangerous and furious beasts.

Im still not sure on how i would portray my designs but after looking around at some designs, it has gave me alot to think and possibly try out.

I would personally like to think i could design my illustrations like these but as im going to be using a graphic tablet for the first time, no-one could possibly know what the outcome would look like. I like both of these types of illustrations especially the design on the right and the reason why i like it is because its different and you dont see alot of designs that mainly use the different shades of grey as well as in this type of conceptual art.

The first type of illustration is more of a fantasy style which would be awesome to have a go at and try to design my illustrations like this. I really like the spooky feel you get when you look at these types of illustrations, which also looks kind of epic in a way and the reason i like this is because it makes you plant yourself into this different world by seeing it through these creative illustrations, which will also give you some idea of what could be out there if this fantasy world was real and how the amount of ideas could be endless. Also another thing i like about the first illustrations is that the detail is quite fine for example if you look at the wolf, you can see each and every single strand of hair which gives the illustration more depth in shading and texture.
